Campania is rich in Greco-Roman archaeology. If you are interested in classical history, you will be spoilt for choice here.

Pompeii, Herculaneum:
Pompeii was founded in the 6th Century, but completely buried, along with Herculaneum and Stabiae, during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79AD. Forgotten for nearly sixteen hundred years, Pompeii was re-discovered by chance in 1748. Today, it is a prized archaeological gem, providing stunning evidence of the grandeur of the Roman Empire.

Paestum:
Paestum or Poseidonia, as it was known in the Greek world, is an archaeological site dating back to the 7th Century BC.
It’s been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1998.
At the site you can admire:
-The Basilica (Temple of Hera);
-The Temple of Ceres and
-The Temple of Poseidon (Neptune).
Paestum lies in the Cilento National Wildlife Reserve, also a World Heritage Site.

Velia:
Velia, or Elea as it was known to its Greek founders, housed the Philosophical School of the same name, founded by Parmenides and Xenophanes.
Around the year 275BC, Elea allied itself with Rome, from then on sharing the history (and fate) of the capital.
The city was abandoned in the middle Ages. Like Paestum, Velia lies within the Cilento National Wildlife Reserve.
